Matt Atwood was named the inaugural head coach of Bellevue's newly established women's wrestling program in April of 2026.

He comes to BU following a successful six-year run as the women's wrestling head coach at the University of Providence in Great Falls, Mont. where he established the Argos as an NAIA national contender. While at Providence, he coached Ira Navarro (101) and Erin Hikiji (twice at 103) to National Championships and coached four others to National Runner-Up finishes. He coached a total of 34 NAIA All-Americans at Providence and oversaw seven Argo student-athletes secure top four individual finishes under his guidance and he led his team to four Top 5 National Dual finishes, including finishing Runner-Up at the 2026 NAIA National Duals Championships.

Prior to his arrival at Providence, Atwood served as the head coach at Midland University where he coached a National Champion and 13 All-Americans. While at Midland, he grew all aspects of the program, including expanding the roster, increasing the academic proficiency via the team GPA, and secured funding to remodel the locker room build an office, and enhance other facility upgrades.

As the inaugural coach, Atwood will oversee all aspects of program development, including recruiting and establishing a competitive culture within the NAIA. His previous experience at Midland University, where he led the Warriors to three consecutive top-10 national finishes, provides a strong blueprint for success in Nebraska.

A graduate of Concordia University in Seward, Neb., Atwood earned his degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing and Agribusiness. An avid outdoorsman, Atwood enjoys hunting, fly fishing, kayaking, mountain biking and more. He enjoys woodworking and spending time with his wife Breanna, who is an oncology nurse, and their two-year old daughter, Nellie.
