Meyer sparks BU sweep over Dickinson State
Sophomore outside hitter Aspen Meyer tied a career-high with 11 kills to lead the eighth-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-21) sweep over visiting Dickinson State University Friday night in North Star Athletic Association action at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Sophomore outside hitter Aspen Meyer tied a career-high with 11 kills to lead the eighth-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-21) sweep over visiting Dickinson State University Friday night in North Star Athletic Association action at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
The Bruins, who have now won nine consecutive matches, improved to 23-3 on the season and 6-1 in the NSAA. DSU fell to 5-18 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Meyer hit .455 in the match with just one attack error in 22 attempts. Kealy Kiviniemi added 10 kills and three blocks. Eve Fountain finished with eight kills and 12 digs.
Mila Aiwohi (28) and Victoria Runyan (15) combined for 43 assists while directing the BU attack to a .331 hitting efficiency.
Taylan Keefer anchored the Bruin defense with a match-high 17 digs.
Cameron Gouw paced the Blue Hawks with five kills. Madi Wahl, Scarlette Schwindt, and Makyah Albrecht finished with four kills apiece.
The Bruins raced out to a 10-3 lead in the opening set as five different Bruins registered kills, and DSU committed four early attacking errors. The Blue Hawks did not record a kill until 24 points into the match as BU cruised to the 25-10 victory. Led by Fountain's four kills, the Bruins hit .533 in the opening frame while limiting DSU to -160 hitting. The Blue Hawks collected just two kills in the first set.
Three straight kills from Berger keyed a 7-1 Bruin run as BU pulled away for a 19-12 advantage in the second frame. Meyer pounded five kills, and Fleischman added four as BU earned the 25-18 victory in the second stanza.
Similar to the second set, the Bruins pulled away midway through the frame, using an 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead. The Blue Hawks countered with an 8-2 spurt to pull to within one point at 19-18, forcing BU to use its first timeout of the match. DSU tied the set at 21-all following a pair of BU attacking errors and a kill by Albrecht. The Bruins closed out the match with a 4-0 run, sparked by a pair of kills from Scheer, to earn the sweep with the 25-21 victory.
The Bruins will host the second-ranked University of Jamestown at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. The Bruins' five seniors, Haley Fleischman, Eve Fountain, Taylan Keefer, Raeanne Kimoto, and Sidney Sledge will be honored following the match.
