Bruin head volleyball coach Trish Siedlik announced today the first signee in the 2016 recruiting class, 5-9 setter Maddie Squiers (Kearney, Neb.). Squiers, a senior at Kearney Catholic High School, will continue her athletic and academic careers at Bellevue University beginning in the fall of 2016.
Squiers, the daughter of Rick and Kim, plans to major in psychology at Bellevue. Rick is this head volleyball coach at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Her team is currently ranked No. 1 in Nebraska in Class C-1. At Kearney Catholic, Squiers has earned numerous accolades including being named all-conference and all-state. She is the team captain and has helped lead the team to three state championships, including two since becoming a full-time starter.
Squiers is a well-rounded athlete, earning letters in both track and basketball. In track she qualified for the Nebraska State Track & Field Championships in the triple jump and earned academic all-state honors. She has been named all-conference and all-state in basketball, leading the team to a pair of state runner-up finishes and one third-place showing in the state tournament.
"Maddie found us," said Siedlik. "I am pretty excited that she sought us out as a program to continue her career, as well as, raise her level as a setter. She is athletic, and what most importantly excites us is the fact that she comes from a chamionship program. It is pretty neat that we have a bunch of players in the program whose parents have been their coach, and are still coaching in the state of Nebraska. I am honored to have their daughters join our team."
Squiers comes from a very athletic family as three of her siblings previously played or are currently playing collegiately. Her sister, Jordan, played volleyball at Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Lewis. Her sister, Becky, played basketball at Rockhurst. He brother, David, currently plays football at Nebraska-Kearney.
The Bruins are currently 11-9 on the season and will host No. 24-ranked Doane College on Monday, Sept. 28, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
