Buttermore honored by AVCA
February 28, 2011
Bellevue University assistant volleyball coach Matt Buttermore was one of 30 volleyball coaches around the nation who were honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 Award.
The award was created in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport. To qualify for the award, nominees had to be younger than 30 years old in 2010.
The list of winners will be featured in the upcoming April/May edition of Coaching Volleyball magazine.
"The most exciting thing about this award is how difficult it is getting to select just 30 winners from the hundreds of nominations," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Congratulations to this outstanding class. The future of our sport is in good hands."
Of the thirty recipients, 18 are head coaches and 12 are assistant coaches. Eight are NCAA Division I women's coaches, four coach NAIA women's squads, three are NCAA Division II women's coaches, three are NCAA Division III women's coaches, two are club coaches, two are from two-year colleges, two coach high school girls programs, one is a high school boys coach and one is an NAIA men's coach.
Buttermore, who has been an assistant coach for the Bruin volleyball program for two seasons, has helped direct Bellevue to the NAIA National Tournament each year as well as to the 2009 MCAC regular season crown and to the 2010 MCAC regular season and tournament titles.
Buttermore has been instrumental in developing all-conference middle blockers Maureen Wardian and Jaclyn Thorson as well as all-MCAC rightside hitter Kali Schnacker. Wardian was also named all-Region the past two seasons as well as garnering honorable mention All-American accolades.
"Matt is well deserving of this award, said head coach Trish Siedlik. "He has helped our program achieve more and more success with his drive and knowledge of the sport. Matt keeps up with the cutting edge of technical skills on the court and in the weightroom, making our program one of the top 20 in the country. He goes above and beyond his duties and we are happy to have him a part of our staff," added Siedlik.
