Records Fall Again at Prairie Wolf Invite

The Bruin men's and women's distance track teams were in action again on Thursday, April 22, as they traveled to Nebraska Wesleyan's Prairie Wolf Invitational. Times continued to fall as three Bruin Bests (school records) were established in cool and breezy conditions.

The Bruin men's 3,000-meter steeplechasers got things going with a 1-2 finish, an historic first for the team. Edrei Murillo took the top spot running 10:44.71. He was followed by Cole Wagner in 10:56.78.

The afternoon's first Bruin Best was set by Desyebelew Debesh in the 1,500 meters running 4:15.91 (4:34 mile) for seventh place in the field of 27 runners. Both Aaron Newton and Dixon Kiptoo delivered personal season bests with Newton coming home in 4:26.02 and Kiptoo running 4:48.41.

The Bruins were represented in the women's 1,500 by Dayana and Diana Montano-Salama who were just off of their season bests with times of 6:57.89 and 7:21.94 respectively.

Taylor Caba established a Bruin Best for the women as she lowered her own record in the 800 meters by slicing three seconds from her best with a 2:34.59 clocking.

Debesh followed Caba's example as he lowered the Bruin 800-meter mark for men with 2:05.01. Aaron Newton also came back after a tough 1,500 meters to post a 2:14.60.

The day's final event for the Bruins was the men's 5,000-meter run where Chris Casart posted a 16:43.94 clocking and Debesh was right behind in 16:54.99.

Coach Craig Christians: "Once again we showed a lot of determination and despite less than ideal conditions, we came home with some personal bests, a couple of records, and an all-around great effort. I'm proud of the way we competed today."

The Bruins have one remaining invitational on their schedule as they travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa next Saturday (May 1) to compete in the Statesmen Relays hosted by William Penn University. The Bruins will conclude their season two weeks later at the NSAA conference meet hosted by Waldorf.
