Suresh paces Bellevue on Day One of Top of Texas
AMARILLO, Texas -- Shreya Suresh finds herself inside the top 10 after she led the Bellevue University women's golf team to fourth place after two rounds of play at the Top of Texas Invitational, hosted by Wayland Baptist University and being played at the 5,864-yard, par 71 Tascosa Golf Club.
New Mexico Junior College leads the team standings at 69-over (637), 12 shots ahead of second place University of Science & Arts (+81). Wayland Baptist is third at 96-over followed by Bellevue in fourth with the Bruins shooting 116-over as a team. University of the Southwest (+135) and Southwestern Christian University (+170) round out the six-team field.
BU shot 59-over in the first round and followed up with a 57-over second round, playing in warm conditions overall that included southwesterly winds in the mid-teens.
Individually, Shreya Suresh was Bellevue's top golfer on Monday in the 30-golfer field. She posted a team-best single round of 9-over to begin the day. Suresh recorded pars on 20 of 36 holes with just three double-bogeys on the day. She backed up her first round 80 with an 82 in the second round as she is 20-over (162) and in eighth place overall.
Patricija Jakovleva is tied for 13th overall after shooting 81 and 84 on the day to enter the clubhouse at 23-over (165). Her day was highlighted by a trio of birdies beginning in her first round on the 354-yard, par-4 No. 18. She followed up with two more in the second round, sinking putts on her fourth shot of the 412-yard, par five No. 15 and her second shot on the 145-yard, par three No. 7.
Nellie Forsen is 33-over (175) through two rounds of play, good for 19th overall. She followed up a first round 86 with an 89 in the second round. A birdie on the 366-yard, par four No. 9 highlighted her day.
Isabella Gomez is tied in 22nd place in the individual standings at 40-over (182). After a 96 in the first round, she knocked 10 strokes off her score for a second round 86. Despite the totals, she managed to make birdie on the 375-yard, par four No. 5 in the first round as well as on No. 18 in the second.
New Mexico JC's Ella Cornwell, golfing independently, tops the individual field at 8-over (150), one stroke ahead of second place Amy Reavis of Science & Arts (+9, 151).
The tournament concludes tomorrow with third round play beginning in the morning with a shotgun start.
