Bruins top leaderboard at Statesmen Invitational
SILVIS, Ill. -- Three of four Bruin golfers are among the top 10 and BU leads as a team after the first round of play at The Statesmen Invitational, being hosted by William Penn University at the 5,806-yard, par 72 TPC Deere Run.
Shreya Suresh, Patricija Jakovleva, and Isabella Gomez were the top three Bellevue golfers on the day. Suresh (+8) is tied for fourth place with Jakovleva (+9) one stroke behind in seventh and Isabella Gomez (+12) lurking in 10th.
Clarke's Amalia Ortega is the overall tournament leader at 2-over (74). She leads WPU's Gabriana Franco (+5) by three strokes and Columbia's Camryn Swinfard is in third place at 7-over.
Bellevue shot 336 (+48) as a team to build a six-stroke lead over host William Penn (+54) while Dakota Wesleyan University and Clarke University are tied for third at 57-over (345) and Columbia College rounds out the top five with a score of 349 (+61).
Suresh produced the most consistent round of the day for Bellevue. She made par on 12 of 18 holes and tapped in for bogey on four others en route to shooting 80.
Jakovleva secured BU's lone birdie on the day, converting on the 430-yard par five No. 9 en route to shooting 81. Gomez shot 84 on the day but was just 1-over across her final seven holes.
Nellie Forsen is tied for 18th overall at 19-over with a score of 91. She improved as the day wore on, finishing with back-to-back pars to close out her round and was just 5-over across her final eight holes.
Final round play resumes tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
