DICKINSON, N.D. -- The Bellevue University softball team stranded nine runners and couldn't recover from a three-run first inning by Mayville State University, falling 3-0 in an elimination game Friday evening at Bravera Field in the North Star Athletic Association Tournament.
The loss ends Bellevue's season with a final record of 29-21, while Mayville State (11-37) advances to face Valley City State in another elimination game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Comets struck early after a hit-by-pitch and an error set up a three-run home run by Lindsey Tulla in the top of the first. It was the only scoring play of the game.
Bellevue had scoring opportunities in multiple innings — including loading the bases in the second — but couldn't cash in.
Katie Cunningham (13-9) went the distance in the circle for BU, allowing just four hits and three earned runs while striking out seven. After surrendering the three-run shot in the first, she allowed just three baserunners the rest of the way.
Kaitlyn Fisher and Cunningham both recorded two hits for Bellevue, while Laila Fiscus added a single. Miranda Garcia drew two walks, and Alexa Sidel chipped in a base hit.
Lacey Mathiowetz (3-15) earned the win for MSU, tossing a five-hit shutout with three walks and seven strikeouts.
