McMurtry sisters blast grand slams to lead BU over Peru
OMAHA, Neb. -- The sister combo of Liana and Breanne McMurtry both hit grand slams to lead the Bellevue University softball team to a 10-2 win over visiting Peru State College Wednesday night in non-conference action at Roy Smith Field.
The Bruins improved to 23-15 on the season with the win. Peru State dropped to 9-27 overall.
The Bruins took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot over the left-file fence by Katie Cunningham.
PSC responded in the top of the second with an RBI single to center field by Kaelyn Hamblen that sliced the lead in half to 2-1.
The Bobcats tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third when a ground ball by Jami Mans scored Kloey Hamblen from third.
A two-out grand slam to right-center field by Liana McMurtry broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth, giving BU a 6-2 advantage.
Breanne McMurtry ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a grand slam deep to left field.
Mariah Unverzagt improved to 5-1 on the season, allowing one run on two hits with no walks in the final 3.2 innings of the game.
Emily Vannatta (5-6) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts in four innings of work.
The Bruins will head to Jamestown, N.D. this Friday-Saturday, April 18-19, for a four-game conference series at the University of Jamestown. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. The first pitch on Saturday is at noon.
