BU downs Campbellsville, dominates ACU at NAIA Softball Invite
SHAWNEE, Okla. -- The Bellevue University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday at the NAIA Softball Invitational, downing Campbellsville, 4-2, in the opener, before dominating Arizona Christian, 14-2, in the nightcap.
With the two wins, Bellevue improved to 7-3 on the season.
The Bruins will conclude the tournament on Sunday (Feb. 23) with a 12:15 p.m. contest against Missouri Baptist and a 2:30 p.m. matchup with Baker.
The Bruins used a three-run sixth inning and the solid pitching of Katie Cunningham to earn the 4-2 victory over Campbellsville in the opener.
An RBI single through the left side by Rylee Warner gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Bruins tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to center field by Cunningham that drove in Kaitlyn Fisher from third. BU took the lead later in the sixth with a two-run double to center field by Mariah Unverzagt, giving Bellevue a 3-1 advantage.
CU answered in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple to right field by Emily Reynolds, slicing the advantage to 3-2.
Bellevue added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a run-scoring double down the left-field line by Fisher, giving the Bruins a two-run cushion at 4-2.
Cunningham (4-1) retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn her fourth win of the season. She allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.
Ellie Coley (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Bellevue 14, Arizona Christian 3
The Firestorm took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to center field by Dayna Hererra.
Bellevue quickly answered in the bottom of the first, scoring 10 runs, sparked by a grand slam from Katie Cunningham. BU also scored on four bases-loaded walks, a bases-loaded hit batsman, and on a passed ball.
A sacrifice fly to right field by Brenna Henry drove in Sierra Lauko from third, making it 10-2 in the top of the fourth frame.
The Bruins responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits, including a two-run triple to center field by Alexa Sidel, an RBI single to center field by Savannah Short, and a run-scoring single to center field by Fisher, pushing the advantage to 14-2.
ACU added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple to right field by Lauko, making the final 14-3.
Ellie Zoucha (2-1) earned the win, scattering six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings.
