BU ends Stars’ shutout streak in home victory
BELLEVUE, Neb. — Behind a pair of goals from Adam Sherwood and a stout defensive performance, the Bellevue University men's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Oklahoma City University on Saturday afternoon at the Renner Dennis Outdoor Sports Complex. The victory lifts Bellevue to 7-2-1 on the season while the Stars drop to 6-3-0.
Sherwood struck in the 11th minute to give the Bruins an early lead. After seeing two attempts turned aside, he followed up his own rebound for his fourth goal of the season. Bellevue nearly doubled the margin just before halftime when Juan Lagares' shot from the edge of the 18 was tipped over the bar in the closing seconds.
The Stars, who entered the match riding a run of six-straight shutouts and more than 622 minutes without conceding, had their best first-half chance in the 27th minute when Bernardo Duarte's bicycle kick sailed narrowly over the crossbar. OCU continued to push in the second half, but Bellevue's back line absorbed pressure before Sherwood delivered again. In the 64th minute, Stanley Richardson played him forward, and Sherwood flicked the ball into space before finishing high for his fifth of the year.
Oklahoma City finished with 14 shots but placed only two on goal, both handled by goalkeeper Kaden Simpson, who earned his fifth shutout of the season. Bellevue tallied 11 shots, eight on goal, and managed the closing stretch to secure the clean sheet.
The result snapped OCU's shutout streak and marked the first goal they had conceded from the run of play all season.
The Bruins head to Florida next week for a pair of games against Florida College on Sept. 25 and Florida National on Sept. 27. Both games will be played at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah, Fla.
