Richardson's 85th minute strike gives BU 1-0 win at Hastings
HASTINGS, Neb. -- Stanley Richardson headed home a corner to lift the No. 7-ranked Bellevue University men's soccer team past Hastings College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lloyd Wilson Field.
With the victory, BU improved to 2-0-0 on the season while the loss dropped Hastings to 0-1-0 after their season opener.
Attempts were limited in the opening half with the teams combining for just six total shots. Hastings racked up three attempts on target, including a pair by Johnny Pedroza, but Kaden Simpson was up to the task, turning aside all three to keep the game scoreless into halftime.
Stanley Richardson and Kyi Nicholson each recorded shots for the Bruins in the first half though neither found their way on frame.
Bellevue totaled three first half corner kicks while Hastings earned one.
The Broncos came close to opening the scoring in the 53rd minute when one of their midfielders carried the ball deep inside the Bellevue area before sending a cross that was flicked on to Pedroza at the back post. He was led slightly away from goal and when he turned to shoot, Simpson came up with his biggest save of the match.
Bellevue turned around some of the attack in the second half, out-shooting Hastings 8-3 over the second 45 minutes.
The Bruins nearly broke through in the 73rd minute with a corner. Yoskar Galvan-Mercado swung a ball into the box by the front post but Buster Honeywood's leaping header sailed over the crossbar.
An 85th minute Hastings turnover led to Bellevue winning a corner kick. Okan Erkocu delivered a ball to the back post that Richardson leapt up to meet and bury inside the back post giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos has a last-gasp push in the 88th minute but were unable to muster a shot as the Bruins held on for the victory.
Simpson finished with four saves to record his second-straight shutout to open the season.
Ethan Watkins surrendered BU's lone goal on the only shot on target he saw as BU out-shot Hastings 10-7 for the match and ran up a 9-2 edge in corners.
Bellevue returns home on Wednesday, Aug. 27 when they host No. 2-ranked William Penn University in the first Top 10-matchup of the NAIA season.
