BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Playing the first official game in the newly-built Renner Dennis Outdoor Athletic Complex, the No. 7-ranked Bellevue University men's soccer team defeated Doane University 4-0 on Thursday evening.
Bellevue has now won four-straight season-openers against Doane, out-scoring the Tigers 16-0 in those meetings, and improve to 6-1-3 all-time in season-openers under head coach Mark Heath-Preston.
Adam Sherwood scored a double with Jeremiah Hteh accounting for the game-winner and Sergio Mijangos also finding the back of the net.
Throughout the first half, Bellevue controlled the attack, racking up a 12-3 advantage in shots including a 6-1 edge in shots on target as they built a 2-0 lead before intermission.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 17th minute with Jeremiah Hteh heading home a corner to open the scoring. Okan Erkocu played a curling ball to the edge of the six that Hteh ran into and slammed back in the direction it came, tucking it neatly inside the post for a 1-0 lead.
Yoskar Galvan-Mercado and Adam Sherwood linked up in the 36th minute to double the Bruin advantage. Galvan-Mercado found Sherwood streaking into the box and fed him a pass. Sherwood turned and spun, ripping a shot inside the near post for his first goal in a BU kit.
Sherwood doubled his own tally in the 58th minute, slamming home a rebound. Juan Lagares saw his initial attempt denied in a collision with the keeper but Sherwood was in position to rip home his second goal of the evening.
Sergio Mijangos capped the Bruins' offensive effort in the 83rd minute with his first collegiate goal. He took a ball in the box with his back to goal before being taken down from behind, then stepped to the penalty spot and put home the strike for a 4-0 Bellevue advantage.
Kaden Simpson earned the clean sheet in goal, stopping the lone shot on frame that he faced.
Curtis Oberg totaled nine saves in the loss for Doane as the Tigers were out-shot 21-7 on the evening.
Bellevue returns to the pitch on Saturday, Aug. 23 for a 3 p.m. showdown at intra-state rival Hastings College.
