Obermeyer joins men’s soccer 2015 recruiting class
Goalkeeper Austin Obermeyer (Gretna, Neb./Gretna HS) signs with Bellevue
BELLEVUE, Neb. - The Bellevue University men's soccer program, under the direction of 2014 MCAC Coach of the Year Matt Briggs, has announced the signing of Austin Obermeyer (Gretna, Neb./Gretna HS) to a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at Bellevue beginning in the fall of 2015.
The son of Maureen and Mark, Obermeyer was coached by Dave Fisch at Gretna High School where he won numerous athletic accolades and is already a member of the Gretna High School Hall of Fame.
Obermeyer was twice named all-area, all-conference, and all-state. He earned first team all-area and all-conference honors as both a sophomore and junior while being named a second team all-state Class B selection as a sophomore and first team pick as a junior. He's helped lead Gretna to three consecutive state tournament appearances in his first three years on the team.
Obermeyer played club soccer for current Bruin coach Matt Briggs for 402 Evolution. "I have worked with Austin the last couple of seasons through club soccer and have witnessed first-hand the quality he offers both on and off the pitch."
Briggs is excited to welcome Obermeyer into the fold for next season, saying, "We are delighted to have signed such a good goalkeeper in Austin." He went on to add that, "Austin is a great shot stopper, but on top of that, his distribution both with his feet and out of his hands is as good as I have seen. We would expect Austin to push (current BU goalkeepers) Ben Martin and Daniel Lastra for playing time right away. I see many similarities between Austin and (first team all-MCAC goalkeeper) Scott Robertson. I would like to think over the course of Austin's four years at Bellevue, training with our goalkeeper coach Tom White day in and day out, that Austin could go on to have a very successful career as a Bruin just as Scott did."
Obermeyer joins earlier signees Matthew Robbins (Omaha, Neb./Omaha Burke HS) and Jacob Krug (Plattsmouth, Neb./Plattsmouth HS) in the 2015 recruiting class.
Bellevue posted a 15-3-2 record this past season and finished the year ranked No. 11 in the postseason NAIA Coaches' Poll. The Bruins won both the MCAC Regular Season and Tournament championships this past season on their way to their winningest season since 2006 (15-6-0). They defeated Hastings College in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round and advanced to the final site for the first time since 2009 and just the second time in school history.
