Gatlin's record-tying round helps BU to seventh place after opening day at U.C. Ferguson Classic

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Bellevue University men's golf team, led by Thomas Gatlin's stellar second round, currently sits in seventh place after the opening day of competition at the season-opening U.C. Ferguson Classic being played at the 6,904-yard, par-71 Lincoln Park Golf Course. The Bruins played 36 holes on Monday and are five-over par after two rounds.
Host school Oklahoma City University leads the 13-team field at 18-under par. Texas Wesleyan is in second, two strokes back at 16-under par.
Bellevue shot team scores of 7-over par, 291, and 2-under par, 282.
Gatlin was the top BU golfer on the day after firing a 7-under par 64 in the second round, combined with a 3-over 74 in the opening round. His second-round score of 64 tied a school record set by Taylor Sundbom in the 2012 U.C. Ferguson Classic. Paced by six birdies, he shot a 5-under 30 on the back-nine of his second round.
Kyle Dale is at even par after shooting a 1-under par 70 in the opening round, followed by a 1-over 72 in the second round. He is currently in a tie for 22nd place. He had five birdies in the first round, and he shot a 2-under 33 on the back-nine of the second round.
Dylan Rodgers shot identical rounds of 2-over par 73. His 4-over total puts him in a tie for 31st place. Rodgers had seven birdies on the day.
Cayden Wynne registered 3-over par 74s in both of his rounds on Monday. He is in a tie for 37th place. Wynne's day was highlighted by collecting six birdies.
Ludwig Klingspor and Randy Christiansen are both tied for 51st place at 8-over par as both shot rounds of 77 and 73.
Cole Fedderson is in a tie for 55th place at 9-over par with rounds of 77 and 74.
OCU's Tres Hill leads the 72-player field at 9-under par. He shot a 7-under par 64 in the first round, followed by a 2-under 69 in the second round. He holds a one-stroke lead over Northwestern's Jacob Medina.
Tuesday's final round of 18 holes will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
