Strong second half lifts Bruins over Midland, 80-62

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University men's basketball team overcame a sluggish start and shot 66.7 percent in the second half to score an 80-62 win over Midland Lutheran College Monday night in non-conference action at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
Sophomore \#Jelani Johnson\# and junior \#Avery Tyler\# each scored 14 points and senior \#Josh Vanderslice\# added 13 to lead the Bruin offense. Midland was led by Zach Rosenboom's 17 points. Jason Ahrens added 15 points for the Warriors.
The Bruins won their fifth-straight to improve to 8-6 on the season. Midland fell to 2-14 overall.
The Bruins shot just 34.6 percent (9-26) in the opening half and were 1-of-9 from behind the arc. Trailing 15-7 at the 11:40 mark, Bellevue closed the opening period on a 21-13 run to tie the game at 28 at the intermission.
Avery and Johnson each scored eight points in the opening half.
Josh Vanderslice scored nine points in an 11-2 run that put the Bruins up by nine points (58-49) with 9:10 remaining in the game.
Bellevue closed the game on a 21-7 run including 14-straight points in a five-minute span.
Bellevue will next be in action on Dec. 29-30, when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to compete in the Briar Cliff University Holiday Classic. The Bruins will play Morningside on Dec. 29 at 3 p.m., before concluding the tournament with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Briar Cliff on Dec. 30.
