BU prevails over York, 5-4, after trading late rallies
BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Xavier Lerma's two-out single in the ninth chased in Ayden Makarus with the go-ahead run to lift the No. 4-ranked Bellevue University baseball team past York University 5-4 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Renner Dennis Outdoor Athletic Complex.
With the win, BU extended their win streak to 16 games improving to 28-3 on the year while York falls to 13-21.
Bellevue 5, York 4
Jay Twedt put the Panthers on the board in the top of the second with a sac fly to score Sam Hodoly.
The Bruins got a run back in the second with a fielder's choice from Dylan Holmes that scored Makarus and Carter Claerhout doubled the other way an inning later to chase in Nick Gravel.
The score remained 2-1 until the seventh. Hodoly and Marek Stone ripped back-to-back doubles to left to chase home a combined three runs, giving York a 4-2 lead with two out in the seventh.
Bellevue answered in the bottom of the inning. Holmes drew a one-out walk and Anthony Lind managed to fight the wind to keep a line drive inside the foul pole for a game-tying two-run home run.
Dakota Angielski came on for the Panthers in the eighth and struck out the first two batters he faced before Makarus delivered a single up the middle. After stealing second, Lerma lined a 1-2 pitch into center field to chase in Makarus with the go-ahead score.
Brody Burnette entered for the Bruins in the ninth and sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around Landon Morgan's single to right. Morgan tried to stretch his hit into a double but he was cut down at second by Lind who dotted a throw right to Mason Spellecy's glove and Spellecy applied the tag for the second out of the frame.
The save was Burnette's NAIA-leading 11th of the season.
Alexandre Dionne (1-0) earned the win, tossing a scoreless eighth inning in relief. Angielski (2-2) took the loss for York.
