Bruins top Grand View, 4-2; Battle Peru State at 6:30 p.m.
PADUCAH, Ky. -- Michael Calderon tossed a five-hit complete game to lead the Bellevue University baseball team to a 4-2 win against Grand View University at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round at Brooks Stadium Friday morning. The Bruins (40-20) will now face Peru State College at 6:30 p.m. Grand View ends its season at 27-29.
Calderon, the MCAC Pitcher of the Year, struck out five batters while allowing two runs, one earned, while improving to 9-2 on the season. Brandon Thompson paced the Bruins offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
GVU opened the scoring in the fourth inning on a sacrifice bunt by Kyler Morgan. The Bruins responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double by Thompson that plated Spencer Duggan who led the frame off with a walk.
The Vikings retook the lead in the fifth inning, scoring on a fielding error by Bruin shortstop Tylor Pavel.
BU scored three runs on two hits and took advantage of a GVU error in the sixth. Duggan started the inning with a single and came around to score a throwing error by the Vikings' shortstop. Sean Mattson added an RBI single before Ryan Knutz recorded a sacrifice fly for the 4-2 win.
Jared Meggison (3-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in seven innings of work.
