Lindsey Wilson edges Bruins, 6-5, at NAIA Opening Round

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Eleventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson College pulled out a 6-5 win over Bellevue University in the Bruins' first game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round at Brooks Stadium Thursday afternoon.
Bellevue will now face Grand View University at 10 a.m. on Friday (May 11) in a loser's bracket game. GVU fell to Peru State, 5-3, in the tournament's first game.
Tylor Pavel, Tanner moore, and Sean Mattson each recorded two hits in the loss. Brandon Thompson recorded a pair of RBIs. Kody McFarland (9-3) took the loss, allowing 10 hits, six runs, and two walks, while striking out seven in seven innings of work.
The Blue Raiders used a pair of hits and a Bruin fielding error to take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Bellevue rebounded in the third, taking its first lead by scoring three runs, highlighted by an RBI single by Tanner Moore and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Thompson.
The Bruins extended the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Kelvin Nelson that plated Sean Mattson who led off the inning with a double to left field.
LWC regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on five singles to surge ahead, 5-4.
A bases-loaded fielder's choice RBI by Lance Lutz tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh frame. The Blue Raiders took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to center field by Manuel Ozoria.
The Bruins threatened in both the eighth and ninth, putting runners in scoring position, but Blue Raider reliever Lance Rose got out of jams to earn the win. Rose (6-0) scattered three hits with four walks while striking out one in four innings of relief.
