Bruins slip past Ozarks, 2-1, in MCAC Tournament

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team used a bases-loaded hit batsmen in the eighth inning to squeak past College of the Ozarks, 2-1, in opening round action of the 2012 MCAC Baseball Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Westgate Field.
The Bruins (38-17) advanced to the winner's bracket final against No. 2-seeded York College on Thursday at noon. York defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 4-1, in the tournament's first game.
Kody McFarland (9-2) collected the complete-game win, scattering five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in nine innings of work. Dustin Loggins (6-3) took the loss, giving up 11 hits while fanning 11 batters and walking one.
Brandon Thompson and Ryan Knutz collected RBIs and Spencer Duggan went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace the Bellevue offense. Duggan's two doubles were the only extra-base hits of the contest.
An RBI infield single by Thompson gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Bobcats tied the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to right field by Cody Pentecost.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Bruins loaded the bases and Knutz was hit by Loggins, to give BU a 2-1 advantage.
McFarland retired the side in the top of the ninth to secure the Bruin victory.
