Bruins sweep Ozarks, 11-1, 2-0

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a doubleheader sweep against College of the Ozarks, winning the opener 11-1 in seven innings and blanking the Bobcats 2-0 in the finale Friday afternoon at Westgate Field in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
Tanner Moore went 5-for-6 with two runs scored, two RBIs and three doubles to lead the Bruin offense.
Bellevue outhit Ozarks 19-6 in the doubleheader as they improved to 30-17 and 11-3 in the MCAC. The Bobcats dropped to 22-23 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
The Bruins will conclude their series with the Bobcats tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. BU's nine seniors will be honored between games.
Game 1: Bellevue 11, College of the Ozarks 1 (7 innings)
Kody McFarland tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out 11 batters without giving up a walk, to lead the Bruins to an 11-1 win in the opener. In the process, he picked up his team-high eighth win of the season.
Sean Mattson went 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, one triple and four RBIs while Brandon Thompson also collected three hits in the game.
A throwing error by McFarland on a pick-off attempt and a passed ball helped Ozarks take an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Cody Pentecost singled on the first pitch of the game and scored from third on a groundout to shortstop.
BU answered in the bottom half of the first and tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single to center field by Thompson that allowed Spencer Duggan to cross home plate.
The Bruins took a 2-1 lead in the third on a double to center field by Moore that scored Tylor Pavel from first base who led the third inning off with a walk.
Back-to-back hits by Mattson and Dusty Kerns allowed BU to take a two-run lead, 3-1. Mattson started the fourth inning off with a double before Kerns notched an RBI single.
BU added four runs on four hits to take a 7-1 lead after five innings of action. Lance Lutz recorded an RBI single and Mattson blasted a two-run triple. The Bruins scored their fourth run of the stanza on a sacrifice fly by Kerns that scored Mattson.
COFO was plagued by two wild pitches, one fielding error and a passed ball as the Bruins scored four more runs to win 11-1 in seven innings. Moore and Mattson each tallied their second doubles of the game in the stanza.
Joel Harrington fell to 3-3 this season, allowing seven runs on eight hits with five walks in five innings of work for the Bobcats.

Moore's RBI single that scored Pavel in the first inning was all BU starting pitcher Michael Calderon needed as he tossed a complete game, three-hit shut out. Calderon struck out six with just one walk as he improved to 7-1 on the season.
BU added an insurance run in the sixth, recording on an RBI single by Pavel off COFO reliever Willy Hoey that scored Ryan Knutz.
Josh Neufeld (3-3) took the loss for COFO, giving up two runs and seven hits in 5.2 innings.
