Big sixth inning lifts Doane over BU, 14-12
OMAHA, Neb. -- Doane College scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to race past the Bellevue University baseball team, 14-12, in non-conference action Tuesday night at Westgate Field.
Bellevue fell to 28-17 overall with the loss. Doane improved to 26-15 on the season.
Brandon Thompson drove in three runs to pace the Bruin offense. Spencer Duggan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Anthony Hincy drove in four runs for the Tigers. Brian Polfer (2-0) collected the win, scattering four hits with one strikeout in 3.2 innings of work.
A sacrifice fly by Thompson, a balk by Chase Wickard, and a ground out RBI by Lance Lutz gave the Bruins a 3-0 edge in the bottom of the first inning.
The Tigers cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third on a ground out RBI by Hincy, while adding another run in the fifth on an RBI double by Mike Albert to make it 3-2.
A two-run standup double off the right field fence by Thompson and an RBI single by Sean Mattson pushed the BU lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Eight-consecutive Tiger batters reached base as Doane took its first lead in the top of the sixth, exploding for 10 runs on seven hits, highlighted by a two-run homer by Andres Rivera and a two-run double by Ethan Schroeder.
A sacrifice fly to right field by Duggan, an infield single RBI by Joey Jones, and a bases-loaded walk by Sean Mattson cut the lead to 12-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth with a two-run double to center by Hincy, expanding the Doane lead to 14-9.
The Bruins scored two runs to begin the ninth on RBI singles by Tylor Pavel and Duggan and loaded the bases with no outs, before Mitch VandenBerge forced a fly out and a strike out. A passed ball brought BU to within two runs at 14-12, before VandenBerge ended the game, forcing a ground out while earning his first save of the season.
Bellevue returns to conference action this Friday-Saturday, April 20-21, when it hosts a four-game series with College of the Ozarks. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m. at Westgate Field.
