Morningside downs Bellevue, 12-10
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Morningside broke away from an 8-8 tie, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 12-10 victory over Bellevue University in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Lewis and Clark Park.
The Bruins fell to 26-14 on the season with the loss. Morningside, which has won 13 of its last 14 games, improved to 27-12 overall.
Bellevue will return to conference action this Friday and Saturday, April 13-14, with a four-game home series against Oklahoma Wesleyan University at Westgate Field. The doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m. both days.
The Bruins, who out hit Morningside 15-10, were led by Kelvin Nelson, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Lance Lutz, who finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
Bellevue scored four runs in the first on RBI singles by Lutz and Sean Mattson and a two-run single by Nelson and increased the lead in the second on another RBI single by Lutz, giving BU a 5-0 advantage after two innings.
The Mustangs battled back to tie the game, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run single by Tanner O'Neill, a two-run triple by A.J. Staiert, and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Candor.
Another two-run single by O'Neill gave Morningside its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, at 7-5.
Nelson drove in Mattson in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-6. Morningside answered in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Josh Gross to maintain a two-run lead at 8-6.
Bellevue scored on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Tanner Moore to tie the game at 8-8 in the top of the sixth frame.
O'Neill drove in his fifth run of the game and Candor drilled a three-run homer to give MC a 12-8 advantage in the bottom of the sixth.
An RBI single by Brandon Thompson and a bases-loaded hit batsmen brought Bellevue to within two runs at 12-10 in the top of the eighth.
Alex Groth was able to shut down the Bruins in the ninth to earn the save. Britton Adams (4-1) got the win for the Mustangs.
