Bruins storm back for split with Peru

PERU, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team split an MCAC doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Peru State, falling 9-2 in the opener, before responding with a 12-0 shutout in the second game. Bellevue moved to 25-19 overall and 11-4 in the MCAC.
Peru is now 20-19-1 on the season and 11-7 in league play.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday (April 29) in Peru.
Game 1
Peru State's Andre Kinder allowed just one hit through the first six innings as the Bobcats cruised to the 9-2 win in the opener. Mike Andrick took the loss, falling to 7-4 on the season after giving up seven hits and three walks in 4.2 innings of work.
The Bobcats grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by J.L. Thomason and an RBI single by Matt Martin.
Peru extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle by Kyle Fredrickson that scored Thomason from third. The Bobcats added a pair of runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Thomason and Patrick Knabe to push the lead to 6-0.
After scoring on a Bruin fielding error, a two-run homer by Martin padded the PSC lead at 9-0 in the sixth frame.
Bellevue avoided the shutout with RBI singles from Anthony Bazant and Juan Rodriguez in the top of the seventh, making the final 9-2.

Bazant went 2-for-3 with five RBIs to back the three-hit shutout by Eric Locke as the Bruins responded with a 12-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap. BU pounded out 14 hits in the win.
Bellevue got out of the gate quickly, scoring four runs in the first, sparked by RBI singles from Rodriguez and Francisco Rosario and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Thompson.
An RBI double by Rodriguez and an a run-scoring single by Tylor Pavel moved the BU lead to 6-0 in the third.
Bazant's RBI single scored Hector Morales to push the BU lead to 7-0 in the fourth frame.
A three-run homer by Bazant fueled a five-run Bruin fifth inning to extend the margin to 12-0.
Locke improved to 7-1 on the season, recording three strikeouts with one walk.
