Bruins split games at IHOP Invitational

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team split a pair of games in the final day of action at the IHOP Easter invitational Saturday afternoon at Westgate Park, defeating Missouri Valley College, 9-5, before dropping the final game of the tournament to William Penn University, 4-2.
The Bruins (24-18) will head to Crete, Neb. on Monday (April 25) for a 4:30 p.m. single nine-inning contest at Doane College.
Bellevue 9, Missouri Valley 5
Junior Brandon Thompson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Tylor Pavel finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles to lead Bellevue to the 9-5 win over the Vikings.
A two-run double down the left field line by Junior Martinez fueled a four-run second inning as the Bruins grabbed an early 4-0 margin in the top of the second.
An RBI single by Thompson extended the lead to 5-0 in the third.
The Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Deante Bernstine to cut the lead to 5-2.
A two-run homer by Thompson and RBI singles by Pavel and Hector Morales gave Bellevue a 9-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Missouri Valley cut the lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run by Ian Gray.
Zack DeValle (4-1) picked up the win, scattering five hits and striking out five batters in 4.1 innings of work.

William Penn scored three two-out runs in the top of the seventh to battle back for the 4-2 win in the final game of the tournament.
Anthony Bazant finished 3-for-3 and scored a run and Brandon Thompson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to pace the BU offense.
A two-run single up the middle by Thompson gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as BU connected on four singles.
An RBI single by Jerry Hernandez in the top of the third cut the lead in half at 2-1.
After two walks from Bruin closer Jake Aylward in the top of the seventh, an RBI single by Hernandez tied the game at 2-2 and Brad Chin gave WPU their first lead of the day on a two-run double to center field.
Statesmen pitcher Darren Gay retired the side in the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts and a line out to center field to secure the win.
