Cougars edge Bruins, 8-5

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Sioux Falls scored four runs in the seventh inning and took advantage of six Bruins errors to pull out an 8-5 win against the Bellevue University baseball team Wednesday night at Wesgate Field.
With the win, Sioux Falls improved to 16-12 overall while Bellevue fell to 17-17.
The Bruins opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run double by Tylor Pavel that scored Anthony Bazant and Francisco Rosario. The Bruins stole four bases in the opening inning, including two by Bazant.
USF got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the third inning. The Cougars scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kevin Santos and eventually tied the game on a throwing error by Bruins' catcher Jacob LaCelle, scoring Cody Burgener.
The Bruins retook the lead in the bottom half of the third inning on a wild pitch by Cougars' starting pitcher Steve Slaubaugh that allowed Bazant to cross home plate.
Burgener tied the game at 3-3, scoring on a wild pitch by BU reliever Sean Mattson in the fifth inning.
BU regained the one-run advantage in the sixth on double play hit by Tylor Shannon that scored Jeremy Camacho from third base.
The Cougars scored four runs on three hits and capitalized one error and two wild pitches by the Bruins in the seventh inning to retake the lead, 7-4.
Bazant cut the Bruins' deficit down to 7-5 scoring on an error by USF's second baseman Ryan Fobes.
USF added a run on a throwing error by pitcher Brandon Thompson that allowed pinch runner Brandon Madsen to come around to score from first base to take a three-run lead, 8-5.
Chris Nichols picked up the win for the Cougars, improving to 4-1 on the season. Nichols allowed just one run in four innings. Alejandro Partidas suffered the loss for BU, allowing four runs and three hits in 2/3 innings of relief. Bruins starter Sean McManus pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts in the no-decision.
The Bruins will return to action Friday and Saturday April 15-16 when they visit Central Christian College. The weekend series was moved to McPherson, Kan., due to expected cold temperatures in the Omaha area. First pitch for Friday's doubleheader will be at 2:00 p.m. while Saturday's twinbill will begin at noon.
