The Bellevue University baseball team will return to action this week with a home nine-inning game scheduled against the University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:00 p.m. The Bruins will also play host to Central Christian College in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference play Friday and Saturday, April 15-16. Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 5:00 p.m. while Saturday’s twin-bill begins at 1:00 p.m. at Westgate Field.

Scouting Bellevue
Bellevue has won its last three games and is currently 17-16 overall and 7-3 in the MCAC. The Bruins are coming off of a doubleheader sweep at conference foe College of the Ozarks on April 9 in Point Lookout, Mo. BU took the opening game, 7-2, before winning the nightcap, 10-2.
Anthony Bazant bats .373 with eight doubles, 27 runs scored, 25 RBIs and 14 stolen bases this season. Hector Morales leads the team in hitting, batting .387 with seven doubles, 21 runs and 18 stolen bases while Francisco Rosario leads the team with 28 RBIs and bats .310. Junior Martinez hits .327 with a team-high 34 runs and is 28-for-33 in stolen base attempts.
Starting pitcher Mike Andrick leads the Bruins’ pitching staff with a 5-3 record and has registered 38 strikeouts in 52.2 innings with a 4.44 ERA. Eric Locke, this week’s MCAC Pitcher of the Week, leads the team with a 3.65 ERA and has compiled a 4-1 record. Closer Jake Aylward is 1-4 with six saves and 16 strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched this season.
BU bats .295 with an on-base percentage of .380 and a .404 slugging percentage. The Bruins have also stolen 93 bases this season. The pitching staff has an ERA of 6.01 in 227.2 innings pitched with 183 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .275 against BU with an on-base percentage of .375 and a slugging percentage of .409.
Scouting Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls is currently 14-11 overall and 6-4 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Cougars are coming off of a conference doubleheader split at Hastings College on April 10.
Cody Burgener leads the Cougars’ offense with a .390 batting average with six doubles, 23 runs, 20 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Jimmy Maxwell bats .286 with a team-high eight home runs and 22 RBIs. Corey Vasquez is second on the team in hitting, batting .348 with four doubles and 18 RBIs.
On the mound, USF is led by Brady Nolz (3-1, 2.48 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 36.1 innings) and Noah Coleman (4-2, 2.61 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 38.0 innings). Brandon Compton has saved two games this season.
USF bats .288 with a .365 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .400. The Cougars have recorded 32 doubles, three triples and 14 home runs this season. The pitching staff has an ERA of 4.13 in 181.0 innings pitched with 138 strikeouts and allow opponents to hit .293.
Scouting Central Christian
Central Christian has lost 14 of its last 15 straight games and is 12-21 overall and 0-12 in the MCAC this season. The Tigers lost 11-1 and 9-3 in a conference doubleheader at Oklahoma Wesleyan University on April 9.
The Tigers are led offensively by Brett Frost (.469, six doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs) and Aaron Premer (.426, four doubles, three home runs, 19 runs scored and 19 RBIs). Frost also leads the Tigers’ pitching staff with a 2.97 ERA, three wins, two saves and 59 strikeouts in 36.1 innings.
CCC hits .295 with 31 doubles, 10 home runs and 66 stolen bases. The Tigers have an ERA of 6.00 with 131 strikeouts in 223.2 innings pitched and allow opponents to hit .307.
Meet the Coaches
Duane Monlux begins his first season as the Bruins’ head baseball coach after spending nine seasons as the head coach at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D. Monlux has compiled an overall career head coachig record of 249-183-1 (.576).
He led the Blue Hawks to three Dakota Athletic Conference regular season and three DAC tournament titles. He guided DSU to an impressive turnaround upon his arrival at DSU. After inheriting a team that went 6-30 the year before his arrival, Monlux’s first team in 2002 doubled their win total from the previous season. Monlux is assisted by Mitch Schmidt, Shawn Malley, Jake Jadlowski, Richie Moore and Chris Williamson.
Matt Guiliano is in his fourth season as head baseball coach at the University of Sioux Falls and led the Cougars to a school record 33 wins last season. He’s assisted by Matt Bowman, Aaron Gaspar, Grant Hieb and Jordan Ahrendt.
Central Christian is coached by Jon Shockley who is in his first season. His assistant coaches include Aaron Childress, Casey Christian, Ryan Kibler, Jacob Morales and Mick Burrill.
Locke Named MCAC Pitcher of the Week
POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- Junior left-handed pitcher Eric Locke has been named the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference’s baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 10.
A native of Polston, Mont., Locke earned the win in Bellevue’s 10-0 win at College of the Ozarks on April 8, scattering three hits in six innings of work while adding five strikeouts in the complete game shut out.

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- The Bellevue University baseball team defeated College of the Ozarks 7-2 and 10-2 Saturday afternoon at Bob Smith Field in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action. With the win, the Bruins improved to 17-16 overall and 7-3 in the MCAC while Ozarks fell to 12-24 and 5-7 in league play.
Anthony Bazant went 5-for-8 with four runs and four stolen bases and Hector Morales was 7-for-9 with three runs scored to lead the Bruin offense in the doubleheader.
Bellevue scored three runs in the third and four in the seventh inning to come away with a 7-2 win the opener. Zack DeValle (2-1) pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out four batters without a walk. Brian Decker (3-4) suffered the loss for Ozarks, allowing three runs in six innings.
Bellevue scored in five of seven innings and out-hit Ozarks, 17-3, to take the second game, 10-2. Morales went 5-for-5 while Junior Martinez added three doubles and Rosario added three RBIs and three stolen bases in the win.
MCAC Preseason Rankings
The Bellevue University baseball team was predicted to finish second in the 2011 MCAC Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Thursday, Feb. 3. Defending champion York College earned the top spot in the poll.
YC, which is ranked No. 19 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25, finished 2010 with a 45-9 overall record, advancing to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round. The Panthers qualified for the National Tournament after winning the MCAC regular season and postseason tournament titles. Oklahoma Wesleyan University was picked third by the league coaches. Rounding out the rankings are Peru State College (4th), College of the Ozarks (5th) and Central Christian College (6th).
