Bruins sign IWCC pitcher Weideman
The Bruin baseball program, under head coach Duane Monlux, signed junior college transfer pitcher Steve Weideman (Gretna, Neb./Iowa Western CC) to a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at Bellevue University.
Weideman was a member of Iowa Western Community College's 2011 squad that finished third at the NJCAA World Series. He earned one win in the World Series as a closer and also collected a save in the NJCAA District Championship elimination game. For the season, Weideman recorded a 2-0 record with six saves, 16 strikeouts, and a 0.75 ERA.
Weideman started his collegiate career at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Neb., finishing the 2010 season with a 5-3 record and 41 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched.
During his high school career, Weideman led Gretna to two-straight Nebraska Senior Legion Class B state championships. In the 2010 championship game, he finished with 15 strikeouts in the win over second-ranked Nebraska City. In the 2009 state tournament, Weideman fanned 23 batters in 13 innings pitched.
“We are happy to have signed another standout from Iowa Western," said Monlux. "Steve led the Reivers in saves in 2011. He has shown that he has the ability to command the strike zone and also has the ability to strike people out. We are anxious to see what he can do for Bellevue University in 2012,” added Monlux.
Weideman joins the Bruins' earlier signees Aaron Beil (Omaha, Neb.), Ryan Knutz (Rochester, Wash.), Kody McFarland (Sugar City, Idaho), Tanner Moore (Omaha, Neb.), Tyler Blood (Salt Lake City, Utah), Paul Morrow (Omaha, Neb.), and Beau Dahmen (Genesee, Idaho) in the 2011-12 recruiting class.
The 2011 Bruins finished the season with a 31-22 overall record, advancing to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round after winning the 2011 MCAC Tournament title.
