Bruins score twice in the 7th, stay alive at NSAA Tournament

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Bellevue University softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to survive with a dramatic, 4-3, victory over Mayville State in a loser's bracket contest at the North Star Athletic Association Softball Tournament Friday afternoon at the Players Softball Complex. 

The Bruins (32-22) will face the loser between No. 5 Dakota State and No. 1 Jamestown at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Mayville State saw their season end with a 12-29 overall record. Bellevue fell to Dakota State, 3-2, in the Bruins' first game Friday. 

After a scoreless first two innings, the Bruins plated two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI double to center field by Grace Glotfelty and on a one-run single up the middle by Erin Sharpe, giving BU a 2-0 advantage. 

A two-run single up the middle by Megan Rabe tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fifth frame. The Comets took a 3-2 lead on an RBI double to deep right-center field by Shaye Kemball in the top of the seventh. 

The Bruins were down to their last out of the season when Kaitlyn Kinman drilled a two-out double to deep left-center field to knot the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Emily Gigax walked, Maddie Siedlik drove in pinch runner Emily Mendick with a single to left-center to give the Bruins the 4-3 victory. 

BU outhit the Comets 9-to-5, led by Glotfelty, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Eight different Bruins picked up at least one hit in the victory. 

Lexi LeCalsey (13-8) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings in the circle. 

Haley Kravetz (5-16) suffered the loss, giving up nine hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work.
